Are PhiBrows SUPER Pigments Worth It? Why You GOTTA Try Them

Emily M |

If you're in the permanent makeup industry, you’ve likely heard of PhiBrows pigments. With various collections under different names, the latest SUPER formula truly stands out.

Given that PhiBrows SUPER pigments are among the most expensive on the market, you might wonder if they are worth the investment. Discover what makes the SUPER formula exceptional and hear what PMU artists have to say about them.

Are Super Pigments Really a Game Changer?

Yes, they are, and here’s why.

SUPER pigments are bioinert, meaning that the body doesn't perceive them as foreign substances and is less likely to resist them compared to many other formulas. The color molecules are coated to ensure that the body doesn't come into direct contact with the pigments, preventing any adverse reactions.

This, along with other features of the formula, leads to better retention after healing:

  • True-to-Color Healing: These pigments retain their original hue without developing red undertones over time.
  • Minimal Migration: They are less likely to migrate beneath the skin, maintaining the design's precision.
  • Color Stability: The pigments are stable, preventing unwanted color changes as they age.
  • Sharp, Defined Healing: They heal crisp and thin, ensuring precise results.
  • Long-Lasting Effects: Enduring results that stand the test of time, but fade gradually with very little to no residue.
  • 100% Safe Ingredients: Manufactured in Germany, these pigments meet high safety standards to ensure quality and safety.

Formulas with Traces of Carbon Black

SUPER pigments are made with carbon black, not iron oxide pigments.

What does that mean? As Branko Babic, the owner of Phi Academy explains, iron oxide pigments or 100% inorganic pigments, turn red after a couple of years.

Carbon black pigment never changes its color. But since it always stays black, the rest of the pigments in the formula fade and the results will reflect as gray after a while.

This is a much better option for fading brows - red pigment residues are very hard to remove with laser, while gray hues go in 1-2 sessions.

What Are Other Reasons These Pigments Stand Out?

Apart from great healing results, which is one of the favorite characteristics both by artists and clients, here are some more reasons why the PMU industry loves SUPER pigments:

  • Smooth Application: The pigments are formulated for smooth, even application, streamlining the microblading process and enhancing efficiency for artists.
  • Consistent Quality: The pigments retain their color and quality over time, delivering reliable and consistent results for professional use.

Why Do Microblading Artists Prefer Phi SUPER Pigments?

One of the main reasons PMU, and especially microblading artists, love SUPER pigments is their consistency. Unlike other available pigments, PhiBrows have a much thicker, honey-like consistency.

The runny consistency of some other pigments often poses a challenge for microblading artists, as they can become messy and dry quickly. PhiBrows’ thicker formula is intentionally designed to sink better within the incision, providing superior control and precision during the application process.

Andrea Aries, PMU Artist and Educator explains why these pigments are her go-to

“My favorite product of all is the PhiBrows Super pigment. I am in love with its consistency and especially its healed color result. In addition to it being the cleanest pigments on the market!”

Yomaira Alcala, PhiBrows Expert says that she mostly uses PhiBrows SUPER Brown 2 and Brown 3 as she mostly works with brunettes and that these shades work wonders for her clients.

Are PhiBrows SUPER Pigments Suitable for Machine Work?

SUPER pigments are primarily created for microblading, but some artists claim they’re a great choice for hair stroke brows or shading (machine work) as well.

Some artists say they need to dilute them with Phi thinner, while others don’t do that.

As Phi artists Mersida Hodzić Ramić says that she likes using SUPER pigments with (Phi) machine because “I don’t even need to make them thinner, because the machine catches pigments really well even without using the thinner for diluting, and makes a precise stroke.”

She also claims that she likes that these pigments heal with a warmer tone, making them her preferred choice.

“The shades she uses most often are Brown 1 and Brown 2, since those shades match the hair color of the majority of her clientele.”

Why Do They Come in Such Small Packages?

SUPER pigments have high color concentration. They are thick, not watery. With a higher pigment concentration, these colors require fewer applications to reach the desired intensity, offering superior coverage and more consistent results.

Small package means there’s less chance of drying or pigment contamination.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

Some artists note that PhiBrows pigments tend to heal on the cooler side. They attribute this to the hybrid formula, which contains traces of carbon black, resulting in cooler, ashier hues both initially and over time.

However, this cooler healing is not necessarily a disadvantage. Most pigments naturally shift towards warmer or cooler tones as they heal, and cooler tones are often preferred by artists because they are easier to adjust during touch-ups than warmer ones.

As said above, if brows develop a grayish tint after a few years, it's easier to remove those hues with laser treatment compared to red residues.
